Henry Purcell Dido and Aeneas
‘Remember me but ah, forget my fate…’ In the first great English opera, Dido, Queen of Carthage, loves the Trojan prince Aeneas, but fate conspires to keep them apart, along with boisterous sailors and cackling witches. It’s a tale of duty and desire, painful tragedy and bawdy comedy, and Purcell’s music ensures it will never be forgotten. Working with the inspirational conductor Eamonn Dougan, a group of outstanding young singers and players create a concert staging of Purcell’s masterpiece for three of the region’s most atmospheric medieval churches.
