The English twelfth century, not least in Ryedale, was a fascinating period. A wise and generous Archbishop of York, St Thurstan, helped to found both Rievaulx and Byland Abbeys. St Aelred of Rievaulx was Thurstan’s friend, and also met St Thomas Becket, years before his martyrdom in Canterbury Cathedral. St Hugh of Lincoln, a later and luckier friend of Henry II, was one of the great monk-bishops of the Middle Ages. These four saints, whose very different lives were connected, tell us much about this extraordinary moment in English history.
