In the summer of 1886 Brahms took a much-needed holiday near Lake Thun in Switzerland. ‘It’s magnificent here’ he wrote on a postcard to a friend, adding how much he was enjoying the beer gardens. But it was an astonishing productive holiday. Buoyant and reinvigorated, Brahms composed three of his greatest chamber works by the lake that summer and this concert brings them together.
