The day begins at the piano, with Schubert at his most amiable and enchanting – a sonata composed while he was on holiday and enjoying ‘unimaginably beautiful countryside’. Schubert is then seen through the eyes of Liszt, who believed him to be the most poetic of composers. The programme ends with the great C minor sonata, searching, dark-edged and uncompromising, played by a Chinese pianist whose artistry the Los Angeles Times describes as ‘powerful, passionate and compelling.’
