Andrew Burn speaker

Haunted by memories of the trenches, Arthur Bliss burst onto the scene as a musical enfant terrible after the First World War. Two decades later, he was a pillar of the British musical establishment – celebrated for his innovative, lyrical compositions (even though some thought they were old hat). His music takes listeners on a rich emotional journey, seamlessly blending bold innovation with lyrical beauty and a vibrant sense of colour. Marking the 50th anniversary of his death, Andrew Burn explains why this oncerebellious spirit is long overdue for reassessment, and is joined by Philip Wilby to reveal why Bliss’s famous Viola Sonata was always a concerto in waiting.
