Beethoven – Violin Sonata no. 8 in G major
Prokofiev – Violin Sonata no. 1 in F minor

‘Nothing can equal this piece in beauty and depth’, said the great violinist David Oistrakh of the sonata that Prokofiev is thought to have composed as a memorial to his friends who were ‘disappeared’ in Soviet Russia. A dark-hued work, it contains passages intended to sound like wind in a graveyard and ‘make people jump out of their seats’, but also moments of profound beauty. Festival artist in residence Tamsin Waley-Cohen joins her longstanding duo partner Huw Watkins to perform it alongside a playful and good-humoured sonata by Beethoven which could hardly be more different.
