Schubert – Swansong (Schwanengesang in a new English
   version by Jeremy Sams)
Wagner (arr. Tomlinson) – Wotan’s Journey

One of the world’s great singers performs Schubert’s final collection of songs. Sung here in a new modern English translation by Jeremy Sams, they centre on a theme of loneliness, depicting a gallery of careworn characters including a love-sick soldier, a rakish fisherman, a famous serenader, a ghostly ‘doppelgänger’ and the mythical figure of Atlas who must forever hold up the sky. Following the interval, Sir John Tomlinson returns to the role for  which he is most renowned, offering a journey through Wagner’s Ring cycle through the eyes of its central character Wotan, who wants power but must pay the price for it.

‘Age does not wither Sir John Tomlinson, a more questing artist than ever… Sams’s translations are unaffected and idiomatic… an unusually direct Lieder experience… formidable’ – The Guardian
