‘Something of heaven ever burns in it’, said Anna Akhmatova of music. The passion and stoicism that she shared with Shostakovich is embodied in three of his late quartets, heard here interwoven with deeply personal poems from the   same period. The concert ends with the mysterious and wintry world of Shostakovich’s 15th Quartet, a cycle of six slow movements which are preoccupied with death, but intensely moving.

We are delighted that Alex Jennings has agreed to appear as reader in the four Truth's Disguise events, replacing  Simon Callow, who has had to withdraw. Simon Callow's talk 'Being Wagner' is unaffected and will go ahead as planned.
