Coffee Concert - Truth’s Disguise II

Carducci Quartet
Alex Jennings (reader)

Akhmatova – Romance
Tsvetayeva – Hamlet’s Dialogue with his Conscience
Shostakovich – Quartet no. 7
Akhmatova – Reading Hamlet
Pasternak – Hamlet
Shostakovich – Quartet no. 5

The Carducci Quartet turn to Shostakovich’s 5th quartet, composed in the last years of Stalin’s rule, and the 7th, dedicated to the memory of his first wife. In parallel, Alex Jennings explores the deep significance of Hamlet for Russian art. Shostakovich knew the play backwards, set Tsvetayeva’s poem Hamlet’s Dialogue with his Conscience and identified with the famous lines from Pasternak’s Hamlet written as an appendix to Doctor Zhivago:   ‘I am alone. All around me drowns in falsehood.’

‘technical rigour, penetrative musical insight and lively yet unified individualism... winning in every sense of the word’ – The Irish Times

We are delighted that Alex Jennings has agreed to appear as reader in the four Truth's Disguise events, replacing  Simon Callow, who has had to withdraw. Simon Callow's talk 'Being Wagner' is unaffected and will go ahead as planned.
